If you can catch them, there are usually vets in any given area that will spay for free. Then you can release them back out.

There was a herd of them prowling the streets at dusk. I suspect they were going to a rumble. The dog wanted out so bad but I tried to explain to her that they
would kick her puppy ass.
I need to get some cat traps. |

This is what I do (or did) for several years and how I ended up with most of my babies. I almost feel as if bendy is baiting me into posting, because I can go on and on and on about this subject. Kimbob is correct and incorrect. The ONLY proven method of managing a feral colony is TNR - Trap, Neuter, Return. There are virtually no places that will "get rid of" a colony, unless it's through euthanasia. Just trapping a colony and re-locating it (there are no places that will take them) doesn't solve any problem, since there's obviously a food source around and more cats would move in. But if the cats are trapped, sterilized and returned and allowed to live out their natural lives then it ends the breeding and new cats won't normally join an established colony. The average lifespan of an outdoor cat is about five years. the part she's incorrect about is I don't know any vets who will sterilize for free. Generally a rescue organization traps them and pays them from
their funds at an agreed upon rate. There are usually low-cost spay/neuter places in most cities, but not all vets will take ferals.

Was that operation catnip? I seem to remember seeing the sign when I lived by the UF vet school.

Yes.
The bob-tail breed is called Manx. At the Alley Cat Allies site, you can fill out an inquiry form and they'll e-mail info about groups in your area. My agency also wanted a donation from caregivers who were calling for assistance. It wasn't always 'required' but strongly encouraged, but that was for people who wanted help for cats they were feeding. Back in the late '90s we wanted $25 per cat. |

I've known a few vets who would do it, as well as some cat rescue places. One in santa barbara and one up in northern california.
It depends on the relationship you have with the vet, or what their mission is, I guess. See?? NOT WRONG!!! bwaahaahaahaa!!!! Kimbob the Laughing

This isn't a permanent solution, but until you can determine what course of action to take... if you need/want to keep them away from your home, you can sprinkle cayenne pepper flakes around your foundation. That's what the church did here to keep the feral cats from pooping in the foundation dirt. (They are in the process of catching them). Every time it rains you have to replace it... but them cats have avoided coming near our house since. BTW, I normally wouldn't care that they're using my house as a litter box, except that a couple of the cats came after my kids while they were playing in the backyard. Just jumped the fence and came running, hissing, even though the kids hadn't provoked them. Mean bastards. |

These aren't bobbed tail so much as crooked tail cats. It's funny how they all have the same tail. There is one tux black and white and 3 tabbys in the
yard right now... pooping in the flower bed.

I had a friend who had a crooked tail cat she called "crook." He basically had a tail, but it was stunted and curled. The vet said it was a common
congenital condition--several other cats in the neighborhood had the same tail.
Good luck with the kitties. I'm so soft hearted I'd rather them not come around. We have one stray that stayed. Fred would come around, but he was too wild. He disappeared for nearly two years. And then one day, he showed up on our patio, looking sleek and well fed. And still just as skittish. But it was as if he wanted to come by and let us know he had a home now...And Skully, the black and white guy, he stopped coming by and we never saw him again... I'm hoping that the two we have keep the others away.

One of my neighbors moved off and just left their cat. ARRRRGGGHHHH And that I would believe is one of the ways feral cat colonies get started. Does FL state
have a vet school, bendy? I am asking because our local humane society uses MS St vet school for spaying and neutering, I believe. Perhaps if FSU has one, the
organization there has a good chance of having low/no cost s &n.

OMGOMGOMGW00T!!!
I just talked to my friend and distant cousin. She used to work here for the pet emergency place and then the animal services center. Then she went to Oregon and some other state in the middle of the west (Nebraska maybe) working with the Humane Society. She has bee the director in a town in Florida for a while but hated the conservative nature of the place and wants to move back here. Last February she interviewed for the director of animal services here but didn't get it. A few months ago she called because she got a heads up on a job that hadn't yet been approved by the county commission but they were thinking of her to run it. She had her first interview yesterday and found out today she's got a second interview scheduled for next week. She'll be in charge of a low cost spay and neuter for the county and OPERATION CATNIP!!!!! I hope she gets the job. Maybe she can give me a job working for her. |
