Anything that raises awareness of the horrors and political inequities in tibet, china itself, taiwan, etc., is actually a good thing. The younger generation
doesn't even know about tienanmen square, tibet, any of it. It's back in the news, now. This is a gooood thing.
I loved the hypocrisy of china trying to reimage themselves and be all friendsies with the world when taiwan is still not allowed to carry their own flag and tibet isn't even participating. One little girl is too ugly to sing so she has to sing offstage while a pretty girl lip syncs. Unattractive cab drivers are hidden away. Craziness everywhere. Nothing changes, they're still bastards, but at least people are hearing and remembering again. They've been living in a little silent zone for far too long. Shine a light, right on it. That's what needs to happen. Kimbob the Not Boycotting

I'm pretty sure it was Bill Clinton who gave China permanent Most-Favored Nation Status. Nothing is going to change as long as there are $$$$$$$$$$ to be
gained there. And the powers that be are just rolling on the floor laughing at us since most Americans can't get off their asses to vote, let alone to
care about what happens to them damn furriners.

I just hate that China gets to pretend that they're NOT horrible. Let's fund the genocide in Darfur and have pretty events in Tiananmen Square. Why
don't we have a square dance at Auschwitz! Party time for all!

I am not someone who watches the news (too depressing) so it is actually a good thing for someone like me to see how they act and treat people.
I really wish we'd never gotten into the "fair trade" stuff. Now I don't think we can make do without foreign goods. |

Yeah, that's true. Also, with our massive debt (I think it's up to 9 trillion), we are now the world's greatest debtor nation and something like
15 percent of the national budget goes just to paying the INTEREST on that debt (we're not even paying on the principle part of it and haven't been for
decades). Which means that if China wanted to, it could cause our dollar to completely collapse. Or so I've read anyway.
I admire anyone willing to get involved and make a stand but I've become too jaded and cynical to think that this country is in any position to affect significant change in the rest of the world anymore.

A dollar collapse is the last thing China wants, though, since they hold so much of their reserves in Treasury notes. Plus, keeping their currency
[artifically] cheap ensures that their exports stay attractive & keeps the trade balance in their favor.

I guess you're right, Mark, China is sitting pretty wrt us. But that hasn't stopped them from issuing economic threats to us:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml I don't know enough about economics to gauge how idle their threats are. I gather that what is more likely to actually happen, assuming we're unable to turn our economy around, is a gradual disinvestment in dollars and reinvestment in other currencies such as the euro, right? I've read elsewhere that Saudi Arabia is also using this tactic as a political threat, which is one reason why we don't stand up to their human rights abuses either.

One more important thing to remember - just as we hope the rest of the world doesn't judge the average american by george bush, the chinese people
themselves must be separated from their government. They have been oppressed for so long, and it is nice to see the "everyman" chinese folks get
something like this in their lives, not to mention the chance to interact with other cultures which are usually hidden from them. People change the world.
Giving them contact with the outside world can change hearts and minds.
And the Dalai Lama said it best: The best way to deal with the Chinese is to engage with them, not to disengage. I need to find the exact quote on that, though. I'm doing it from memory.

i told an mba friend of mine two months ago that higher gas prices and the pain in the ass of dealing with the Chinese manufacturers would rejuvenate American
factories.
This week, the Wall Street Journal publish an article that mentioned that exact thing. As long as the economic forces can play out...it might change a lot of things...

Here's what I don't understand. Given the time change, China is like several bazillion hours ahead of the US. The good stuff is covered in prime time
on the east coast. However, those of us on the left coast can't watch it live. We have to watch the delay.
This is totally fucking with my sleep schedule. |

its only 15 hours different, east coast is at 12 hours. staff at the nbc have math impairments, but if it is only 12 different, then they just ahve to change
the AM/PM and they know the time, 15 hours causes their little pea brains to explode............
the really sad things is i believed them when they show the "live" graphic

The only part of the Olympics I've seen is that viral video of Shrubya banging the US flag on his knee.

I LOVE the olympics. Sadly up until 2 days ago we didn't even have a medal. Now we have 7 (wahoo!)
I like seeing the best in the individual sports, etc etc. I was on holidays last week so I got to watch a lot of the olympics (especially the swimming and gymnastics - 2 of my faves!) |
