A couple times I thought of making a LIEberals ONLY! forum so I could rant without offending anyone, heh.
Tonight? It all seemed scripted, right down to every smile, handshake and Michelle Obama crying during Beau Biden's speech. But of COURSE it was! It's too important to leave anything to chance this year. And still? Even despite that? I shed a few myself. [/pathetic]

Hard not to shed a few. There are moments where all you can think is "there is hope on that stage."
When was the last time you felt remotely optimistic for your country? It's been a long time for me. If hope has to be scripted, so be it. Kimbob the Seeing Light

When was the last time you felt remotely optimistic for your country?um, everyday. And that answer has nothing to do with who is in the White House. We're the greatest nation on earth. Always have been, always will be. |

If you make that libs only forum, count me in! I've had TWO conservative friends message me this week to tell me that Obama can't win. *shrugs* I
expected more of Bill's speech, but I loved, loved, loved Michelle's, Hillary's and the Biden's.

I agree, Kimbob, it seems like ages since I've really felt such hope for our future.
But even on a simpler level, just contemplate for one moment what electing a black President does for the millions of black children who probably never expected to see this in their lifetimes. Or for their grandparents who had trouble even voting. I've been getting these momentary surges of joy that are so overwhelming when I think about what this does for their self image. Historical, indeed! And deep, deeply needed healing for one of our most destructive national wounds.

We do not have the best ecology. We do not have the best employment rates. We do not have the best quality of life for our citizens. We do not have the best relationships with our allies. We do not have the best programs for our children. We do not have the best infrastructure. We do not have the most advanced research and science programs. We might have the most expensive military, but I'm willing to bet china spends more. All we have left is the biggest ego, and not a lot with which to back it up. Once we were the greatest. Not any more. It's good to be patriotic, but we must also be patriotic with our eyes open. It makes me very sad, but now I am more hopeful for the future. As long as we're not bleeding money out for the mania of some slightly psycho power- and wealth-monging leader, we might actually rebuild some of our greatness. Kimbob the Future Looking --------------------------------------------- I'm editing to add some facts, because I didn't want to just be talking out of my ass. I didn't always cite my sources, but the majority of them come from the CIA World Factbook. Health care/General Health: According to the World Health Organization, the united states is ranked 37th in the world's health systems. The US is ranked 24th in healthy life expectancy. In overall level of health, we are ranked 72nd. Educational systems: According to Unicef, the US ranked 18th out of 24 countries evaluated for educational effectiveness. The UN also ranked the US in the bottom of effective education systems in the world's richest countries. Economy: We have the highest external debt in the world. (CIA World Factbook 2008) We are only fourth in economic aid donors. We have the 9th ranked GDP per capita. Ecology: According to the Environmental Performance Index of 2008, the US is ranked 39th. Employment rates: The US is in the top 50% of unemployment rates. Programs for children: According to the World Fact book from 2007: The United States is ranked 19th in order of their average rank for the six dimensions of child well-being that were assessed: material well-being, health and safety, educational well-being, family and peer relationships, behaviors and risks, and subjective well-being. Quality of Life: Based on data from the CIA World Factbook, Syria, Croatia, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Thailand, and Taiwan all have lower percentages of the population living in poverty than the united states does. "Poverty" is defined as an economic condition of lacking both money and basic necessities needed to successfully live, such as food, water, education, healthcare, and shelter. The US spends more hours at work than any other country. The US has the 3rd HIGHEST instances of death involving firearms. The US is 7th in home ownership rates. The United States is tied with three other countries for 9th place in the Freedom of the Press rankings from 2008. 20 countries ranked higher. The US is ranked the 4th most likely country to have a terrorist attack - right after Pakistan and well above Afghanistan and Iraq. (World Markets Research Center Terrorism Index. According to Canada's CIFP, The united states ranks about in the middle of democratic participation, political stability, human rights, government and economic efficiency, accountability, etc. Military Expenditure: The US does, in fact, have the highest rate of military expenditure in the world - over 300 billion euros spent in 2006, compared to china at less than 30 billion. There was no real front where I could find the US to be a leader in anything positive. We may not be the worst country in the world, but we are far from the greatest by any yardstick. But we used to be. And we could be again. I have hope.

Smack, think too how cool it is that 45 years to the day that MLK gave his great I Have A Dream speech, a black man accepts the nomination in one of the two
major political parties. That's pretty cool, I think.

I wish race wasn't such an issue but maybe this will help make it less of one.
And I think Kimbob is wrong. |

I totally concur with Kimbob and would add only one fact, which I've read in several different places: the US spends more money on its military than THE
ENTIRE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED! It's nothing but insanity.
Shutter, that's so awesome! Dr. King would be proud. In 1988 I did so much work on the Jackson campaign that I was once asked to go to the airport to pick Jesse up in one of their vans. I was so honored that they would trust me with something like that. But I was unable to as I'd never learned how to drive a stick shift. Anyway, none of us ever believed for a moment that he'd get the nomination, let alone be allowed into the White House. The gratification came just from knowing that we were part of that historical effort. It was an incredibly rewarding feeling. And I met so many wonderful, amazing people. I'm fighting back tears today just thinking of it.

I guess I could have all my facts wrong, but those are mostly based on the CIA World Fact Book.
But I still think america has potential to rise again. I think that if we ignore what's happened we are at a greater risk than facing it and preparing to move ahead. If we fail to see what's happening, we could find ourselves slipping beyond help. It's like my ass, if I pretend it still fits in my highschool jeans it will continue to expand until they need a crane to get me out of my house. Smacky: Military spending as of 2006:

Well we could all move to norway and pay 50% of our wages in taxes...but heck, we wouldn't be spending 25% of it on health care...so it equals out...
I'm on the fence about Obama. I guess i've become a skeptical old fart. Everytime someone steps up to the podium and says I HAVE A DREAM, they get assassinated before they have a chance to change the world.

the Canooks are going to be having a federal election this Fall too. It seems like this happens every 2 years, it's pathetic. We don't have the 15
month lead up though. 15 days maybe.

I already pay almost 50% of my wages in taxes. Plus the additional for health care. Quality of life in those countries tends to be higher than in america, so
if the money goes out in a tax bill or in a payment to an insurance company that may very well deny me coverage on a whim, I'll bank on the taxes to be
fairer.

Yeah, he obviously chose her JUST because she has a gash. He looks desperate. How many women are going to vote for a militant pro-lifer? Not likely.
And at his age - most people will be looking at his VP choice as a potential president. Um... don't think so. There was a lot better vagina to go after. He's starting to look desperate. I like that. Kimbob the Laughing
