Lathe of Heaven. I stumbled onto it tonight--didn't even know they had made a movie version of Ursula LeGuin's sci-fi classic. I wouldn't say the
film achieves greatness but it's damn entrancing. The story borders on solipsism but it's very nuanced. That's the only way I can think of to
describe it. Now I'm tempted to seek out the book.
So much of our experience is intangible. So much of what we perceive cannot be expressed: it's unspeakable.
And yet when we communicate with one another and we feel that we have connected and we think that we're understood, we have a feeling of almost spiritual
communion. And that feeling might be transient but I think it's what we live for. ~ Waking Life

Then again, if it's all just a dream, there is no need to question anything logically since dreams are not required to make logical sense. |

I think that's probably why David Lynch refuses to talk much about his movies. Yet people still accuse him of being deliberately vague, all the time. I
heard an interview with Robert Plant once where he stated that American audiences did not appreciate a lot of their (Led Zep) music the way their European
audiences did because most of their lyrics were more poetic than decipherable. The Navahoes and other tribes too believe that the stories they tell contain
several layers of meaning and that one interprets them at whatever level suits him or her.
It's not that I disagree with you, Omni, or that I want to argue that my interpretation is better. I probably just get excited by my mystical interpretation of Donnie Darko because there are SO very few films that even contain the POTENTIAL to have a mystical interpretation put forth. Mysticism is still highly countercultural. It goes against everything that the "powers that be" want us to think about ourselves. Your interpretation is interesting in its own way. In fact, my own take on Lynch's Mulholland Drive is that the first three-quarters of it is actually a kind of purgatorial dream that she has in the moments after she kills herself. Very similar to what you said, a dream of how she wanted her life to be.

I think that a director who can make a film that actually provokes a discussion is rare these days. I like all the interpretations of the Darko movie. If it
works on all these levels, who cares what the REAL story is?
And I agree that an artist can doom his own work by over explanation. One thing i've learned about song writing is that for it to be successful you have to write lyrics vague enough for anyone to imagine you are singing directly to their experience or about their experience. And i never wanted to ever know what Zeppelin referred to in their lyrics...really...LOL

I'm still blown away. I'm actually looking forward to watching this again, and that rarely happens to me. One of the songs, the one that won the
Academy Award, I watched it 3 times last night and cried every time. Not sad crying, just because it's so beautiful.
